Roots Radicals!!! Rancid Live...

Rancid was formed in 1991 in San Francisco by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, formally of Operation Ivy. Matt Freeman decided to form Rancid to help Tim, his lifelong friend, overcome severe alcohol addiction. From those humble beginnings, Rancid have written seven critically acclaimed albums and have been credited as being one of the bands who revived the mainstream popular interest in punk rock in the 1990's.

Rancid includes Tim Armstrong on vocals and guitar, Matt Freeman on bass, Lars Frederiksen, who joined as second guitarist after leaving the UK Subs in 1993, and Branden Steineckert, who replaced Brett Reid on drums in 2006. The band became famous in 1994 when their single "Salvation" off of Let's Go was a hit on alternative radio stations. They then released their most successful album ... And Out Come the Wolves, which went platinum and includes their best known songs "Ruby Soho", "Timebomb", and "Roots Radicals". They have recently released their seventh album Let the Dominoes Fall, which is at number 11 on the US charts.

Rancid play ska and hardcore influenced punk rock. They have played alongside the Ramones, turned down a request by Greenday's Billie Joe Armstrong to join the band, been described as being "a lot better than the old punk" by Joe Strummer in an interview with Q, and reportedly told the Sex Pistols that they should open for Rancid when they were asked by the older punks to play on the Filthy Lucre Tour. Now that's punk rock.

This is a video file of a Rancid acoustic gig, which also features John Doe from X. This is only the second time they have performed a full gig acoustically and it has an unrehearsed, fun feel to it. They perform a few covers including a funny version of Greenday's "Time of Your Life", after which they go into Social Distortions "Story of My Life" showing where Greenday got the inspiration (It's exactly the same!) for the riff in "Time of your Life". Enjoy!

Setlist:

In This House That I Call Home (Rancid with John Doe), St Mary (Rancid with John Doe), Who Would've Thought, Time of Your Life (Greenday cover), Story of My Life (Social Distortion cover), Knowledge (Operation Ivy cover), Roots Radicals, Journey to the End of East Bay, Gates of the West (The Clash cover), Cretin Hop (The Ramones cover), Train In Vain (The Clash cover), Tenderloin, To Have and to Have Not (Billy Bragg cover).
